Duke's Umbrella
Bar design · Glasgow
An opulent gastro-pub on Argyle Street, Glasgow — rich menu with classic Victorian styling. Existing fabric retained where it earned its keep; service flow, FF&E and lighting reset to commercial-grade.
Formerly ‘Trader’s’ on Argyle Street, Glasgow — Duke’s Umbrella is an opulent gastro-pub offering a rich menu with classic Victorian styling. We kept what earned its keep and reset everything operational underneath.
The existing room had genuine fabric worth keeping — moulded plaster, the original bar back, deep panelling. The brief was Victorian-styled but commercially operating in 2024: rich menu pricing, weekend covers, late-bar trade. Heritage on the surface; service flow underneath.
Brand and identity rewrote the venue’s voice from “neighbourhood pub” to gastro-led drinking room — wordmark with serif gravitas, menu typography that reads in low light, a website that takes the storytelling lead. Custom artworks commissioned for the snug; lighting reset to four scenes for the full lunch-to-late arc; FF&E re-specified for daily service abuse without losing the period feel.
Sited at 363 Argyle Street on the corner of James Watt Street. Part of The Superlative Collection.
